Mother's Day and My Mom

May 08, 20252 min read

This picture is of my mom and her beloved dog, Teddy. I'd like to believe I’m number one in her life—but if you look closely at that picture, it’s clear who really holds that title! I should also mention that I have a sister. For those of you who’ve been on my boat, you’ve probably heard me joke about how denial works for me, so let’s just say I’m number one in my mom’s world. (My sister would agree… eventually.)

The photo was taken on the boat about a year ago during Teddy’s very first ride. As you can see, he wasn’t quite sure about this whole “boat” thing—but as long as he had his mommy close by, he was totally fine.

Another photo we love goes back about eight years—one of my mom proudly holding a small spot fish she caught. It’s a reminder of why I don’t do serious fishing charters. Making my mom happy with a small catch is much easier (and more fun) than chasing trophies.

But of all the pictures, there’s one that means the most to our family. It’s a photo of my mom and dad on the boat—one that hangs in her home and sparks memories every time I visit. We often joke that she looks like she’s overshadowing him in the photo, almost like a loving ghost hovering over his shoulder. But if you knew my dad, you’d know he didn’t mind one bit. He loved her deeply and loved being on the water with us.

This post is just a small thank-you to my mom for her support, humor, and love—and for being the heart of so many of our memories, both on land and at sea.

Happy Mother’s Day to my amazing mom—and to all the wonderful moms out there! -Captain Dan
